The Freemium Model

I have always wondered about the so called "Free" stuff. Here is an article which talks about how the freemium model works in the web. I have seen lot of web sites provide free services and offer an upgrade at a cost.  The article writer says that this is better than advertising and generates more revenue in troubled times like these.
